What is ACL Reconstruction?

ACL Reconstruction is a surgical procedure to replace a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in the knee.
The ACL is one of the main ligaments that keeps the knee stable during activities like running, jumping, or changing direction. When it gets torn (often due to sports injuries or sudden trauma), the knee may feel unstable and weak.
In ACL reconstruction, the damaged ligament is removed and replaced with a graft (usually taken from the patient’s tendon or a donor tendon). This helps restore knee strength, stability, and function, allowing patients to return to daily activities and sports.

Why is ACL Reconstruction Needed?

  • Persistent knee instability after an ACL tear
  • Difficulty in running, jumping, or pivoting
  • Recurrent knee buckling during daily activities
  • To prevent further joint damage, such as meniscus or cartilage injury

Procedure of ACL Reconstruction Surgery

1. Pre-Surgery Preparation
  • The patient undergoes physical examination, MRI scans, and blood tests.
  • Anesthesia (general or spinal) is given for a pain-free surgery.
  • The knee is cleaned and sterilized.
2. Graft Selection
  • A healthy tendon (usually from the hamstring or patellar tendon) is chosen as a graft.
  • Sometimes, a donor graft may be used.
3. Arthroscopic Surgery
  • Small keyhole incisions are made around the knee.
  • A tiny camera (arthroscope) is inserted to view the knee joint.
  • The torn ACL is removed and the knee joint is prepared for reconstruction.
4. Graft Placement
  • Small tunnels are drilled in the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia).
  • The graft is carefully placed through these tunnels to act like a new ligament.
  • Screws or fixation devices secure the graft in place.
5. Closure and Recovery
  • The small incisions are stitched.
  • The knee is bandaged, and a brace may be applied.
  • The patient is moved to recovery with pain management and physiotherapy guidance.
